Few fittings sit as comfortably in a modern Australian home as plaster lights. Cast from natural gypsum, they have a soft, sculptural quality that metal and glass fittings can't match — and because most of them can be painted, they're one of the only lighting choices that can genuinely disappear into your walls and ceilings.

What are plaster lights?

Plaster lights are light fittings cast from gypsum plaster (you'll also see some made from raw ceramic). Gypsum has been used for centuries in decorative mouldings, cornices and walls, so a plaster fitting reads as part of the architecture rather than an object attached to it. Out of the box they come in a matt white or raw finish, with a solid, chalky texture that diffuses light beautifully.

Plaster wall lights

The most popular of the family. Plaster wall lights range from simple half-moon up/down washers to sculptural arcs and curved sconces from brands like Havit, Superlux, Domus and Ore Lighting. They're perfect for hallways, bedheads, living rooms and stairwells where you want a warm wash of light without visible hardware. If you're comparing materials, our full indoor wall lights range lets you see plaster alongside metal, glass and travertine options.

Plaster downlights — surface mounted and trimless

Plaster isn't just for walls. Surface mounted plaster downlights sit below the ceiling like a small sculptural cylinder — no cut-out required — while trimless plaster downlights are recessed and plastered flush into the ceiling, so once painted there's no visible trim or bezel at all. Trimless designs like the Ore Lighting Nura range are a favourite with designers chasing that seamless, architectural ceiling. For conventional options, see our LED downlights range.

Can you paint plaster lights?

Yes — and this is the big drawcard. Most plaster lights are designed to be painted:

  • Use a standard water-based (acrylic) interior paint.
  • Apply light coats with a brush or small roller, keeping paint away from the lamp holder and any LED components.
  • Match your wall colour exactly for a fitting that all but disappears, or paint a contrast colour to make it a feature.
  • Trimless plaster downlights are painted along with the ceiling after installation and setting, which is what makes the finish completely seamless.

Where can you use them?

Most plaster lights are rated IP20, which makes them ideal for indoor dry areas — living rooms, hallways, bedrooms, kitchens and stairs. For bathroom zones or covered outdoor areas, check the IP rating on the specific product page first, or get in touch and we'll point you to a suitable option.

Globes and dimming

Depending on the design, plaster lights take G9, E14, E27 or GU10 globes, and a number come with built-in LED. Most are dimmable when paired with a compatible LED globe and dimmer — the details are listed on every product page.
