It depends on the effect you want. Spike lights are versatile and movable for uplighting plants and trees, step lights make paths and stairs safe, bollards line walkways, and inground lights highlight features from below. Many gardens mix several types.

Many garden lights are 12V, which an experienced DIYer can install by running low-voltage cable from a transformer. Mains 240V fittings should be installed by a licensed electrician, and solar lights need no wiring at all.

For exposed positions choose IP65 or higher. Inground fittings should be IP67 because they can be covered by pooling water. Spike and bollard lights commonly carry IP65.

316 marine-grade stainless steel and solid copper both resist salt corrosion well, so they are ideal near the coast. Powder-coated aluminium suits most inland gardens.

12V low-voltage systems are safer and easier to DIY and extend, which makes them ideal for garden beds and spike lights. 240V mains gives maximum brightness and is required for some fittings, but it needs a licensed electrician.

Use adjustable spike lights at the base angled upward to wash light through branches and foliage. Warm white around 2700K to 3000K gives a natural, inviting look for planting and garden features.
