Anywhere you have a long, rectangular surface to light, a linear pendant delivers even coverage that round pendants simply can’t.
As a general guide, choose a linear pendant that is around two-thirds of the length of your table or island, leaving roughly 15–30cm of clearance at each end so the fixture doesn’t overpower the surface. Over a dining table, hang the pendant so the bottom of the fixture sits about 700–850mm above the tabletop — high enough to keep sightlines clear across the table, low enough to focus the light where you need it. For islands and benches, the same 700–900mm range works well. If you’re lighting a table longer than 2.4m, consider a long single bar pendant or two coordinated fixtures hung at the same height.
